Salary Calculator — input your values
What does this financial calculator do?
This salary calculator converts your gross pay between hourly, weekly, monthly and annual amounts. You enter your pay in whichever unit you are offered — a $25 hourly wage or a $65,000 annual salary — and the calculator derives all the others.
The conversions use the hours per week and paid weeks per year you provide, so the results reflect your real work schedule, including unpaid time off. You also see biweekly and semi-monthly figures, which is how many payrolls actually pay.
Formula and variables
All results are gross amounts before payroll deductions.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| hours/week | Hours worked per week |
| paid weeks | Weeks paid per year (usually 52) |
| Annual | Gross annual salary |
Worked example
A job offered at $25 per hour, working 40 hours per week, 52 weeks per year.
- Weekly: $25 × 40 = $1,000.
- Annual: $1,000 × 52 = $52,000.
- Monthly: $52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33.
- Biweekly: $1,000 × 2 = $2,000.
Answer: $52,000 per year, or about $4,333.33 per month.
Tips and common mistakes
Tips
- Compare job offers on an hourly basis: a $60,000 salary with 50-hour weeks is roughly $23/hour — less than it sounds.
- Include paid time off in your calculation; a job with more vacation is worth more at the same salary.
- Gross pay is before taxes — estimate take-home with an income tax calculator before budgeting.
- Overtime, bonuses and commissions are not included here; add them separately to your annual estimate.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Multiplying a monthly salary by 12 without checking whether it is paid 12 or 13 times per year.
- Using 4 weeks per month instead of 12 months per year, which understates the annual figure.
- Comparing salaries at different work schedules without normalizing to hourly or annual equivalents.
Salary Calculator — frequently asked questions
How do I convert hourly pay to annual salary?
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours per week, then by the paid weeks per year. $25/hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000 per year.
How do I convert an annual salary to hourly?
Divide the annual salary by the paid weeks per year, then by the hours per week. $52,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = $25 per hour.
What is the difference between gross and net pay?
Gross pay is the full amount earned before deductions; net pay is what lands in your account after federal and state taxes, social security, Medicare and benefits.
Why is my monthly pay not exactly salary ÷ 12?
Some payrolls pay semi-monthly (24 payments of salary ÷ 24), others biweekly (26 payments of the weekly equivalent, with some months having three checks). Both total the same annually.
How do unpaid vacation days affect my pay?
They reduce your paid weeks. Working 50 paid weeks instead of 52 cuts an annual figure by roughly 4% — this calculator accounts for that directly.
Does this calculator include overtime?
No — it assumes a fixed hourly rate across all hours. To include overtime, calculate the overtime amount separately and add it to the annual figure.
