Worked example
A dinner bill is $80 and the party wants to tip 20%.
- Tip = $80 × 0.20 = $16.00.
- Total = $80.00 + $16.00 = $96.00.
- Split two ways: $96.00 ÷ 2 = $48.00 per person.
Answer: Each of the two diners pays $48.00.

- To estimate a 20% tip quickly, move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it.
- Many people round the total to a convenient dollar amount so everyone pays an even figure.
- If service was exceptional or poor, adjust the percentage up or down before splitting, not after.
- When tipping on top of a discount, apply the tip to the discounted total you actually pay.

Is the tip based on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
This calculator uses the pre-tax bill, the standard US convention. Some groups prefer tipping on the total including tax, which gives a slightly higher tip.
