Volume Converter
Convert between liters, milliliters, gallons, cups, cubic feet and more, with a table showing any volume in every unit.
Volume Converter — input your values
What does this conversion calculator do?
The volume converter handles everyday liquid and capacity units — liters, milliliters, cups, pints, quarts, gallons and fluid ounces — as well as cubic measures like cubic meters, cubic feet and cubic yards.
Every unit is converted through the liter as the reference base, so the same value is always returned in both directions. Note that US and UK units differ: a US gallon holds 3.785 L while the imperial gallon holds 4.546 L.
Formula and variables
1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L; the imperial (UK) gallon = 4.54609 L, about 20% larger.
| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| factor(from) | How many liters one 'from' unit equals |
| factor(to) | How many liters one 'to' unit equals |
Worked example
Convert 2 US gallons to liters.
- 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L, so 2 gal = 2 × 3.785411784 = 7.57082 L.
Answer: 2 US gallons ≈ 7.57 L.
Tips and common mistakes
Tips
- Useful anchors: 1 US gallon ≈ 3.785 L, 1 UK gallon ≈ 4.546 L, and 1 liter ≈ 4.23 US cups.
- One cubic meter equals exactly 1,000 liters, which makes pool and tank calculations easy.
- In cooking, check whether a recipe uses US or UK measures — a UK pint is 568 mL, a US pint is 473 mL.
- Milliliters and cubic centimeters are equal: 1 mL = 1 cm³.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a US gallon conversion for a UK gallon — the imperial gallon is about 20% larger.
- Assuming a cup is metric everywhere: a US cup is 237 mL while a metric cup is 250 mL.
- Confusing fluid ounces (volume) with ounces (weight) — 1 US fl oz is 29.57 mL, not 28.35 g.
Volume Converter — frequently asked questions
How many liters are in a gallon?
A US gallon is 3.785411784 L and a UK (imperial) gallon is 4.54609 L. Recipes and car fuel figures usually specify which one they use.
How many cups are in a liter?
There are about 4.23 US cups in a liter (based on the 237 mL cup), or exactly 4 metric cups of 250 mL.
Is a UK pint different from a US pint?
Yes — a UK pint is 568 mL and a US pint is 473 mL. Beer glasses in the UK and Ireland hold the imperial pint.
How do I convert cubic meters to liters?
Multiply by 1,000. One cubic meter is exactly 1,000 liters, so 2.5 m³ = 2,500 L.
How many milliliters are in a liter?
Exactly 1,000. A 1.5 L bottle holds 1,500 mL, which is how drinks are labeled in most countries.
What's the difference between a fluid ounce and a regular ounce?
A fluid ounce measures volume (1 US fl oz = 29.57 mL) while an ounce measures weight (1 oz = 28.35 g). They only align by coincidence for water.
