What does this construction calculator do?
The asphalt calculator estimates the volume of hot-mix asphalt you need for driveways, walkways and parking areas in cubic feet and cubic yards.
It converts the volume to weight in tons using the density of compacted hot mix, adds a waste allowance for raveled edges and over-run, and tells you how many dump trucks to expect.

Worked example
A 20 ft × 10 ft driveway paved with 3 inches of hot mix at 145 lb/ft³, ordering with 10% waste.
- Area = 20 × 10 = 200 sq ft.
- Thickness = 3 in ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft.
- Volume = 200 × 0.25 = 50 ft³ = 1.85 yd³.
- Weight = 50 × 145 = 7,250 lb = 3.63 tons.
- With 10% waste: 3.63 × 1.1 = 3.99 tons.
Answer: Order ≈ 4 tons of hot-mix asphalt.
Tips and common mistakes
Tips
- Pave in warm, dry weather — asphalt cools quickly and must be compacted before it drops below about 185°F.
- For driveways, lay 4–6 in of compacted crushed stone sub-base beneath the asphalt mat.
- Small patches can use cold mix or bagged asphalt; anything over a few tons needs a hot-mix plant delivery.
- Allow a fresh driveway to cure for 24–48 hours before parking cars on it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring the mat thickness after compaction when the bid was based on the loose thickness — they differ by 10–15%.
- Forgetting the sub-base: paving directly on soft ground cracks and settles within a season.
- Ordering exact tonnage with no waste — the paver always needs a little extra for edges and leveling.

Can I pave asphalt in cold weather?
Hot mix is usually installed between 50°F and 90°F. Below about 45°F the mix cools too fast to compact properly.
How much waste should I add to the asphalt order?
Add 5–10% for raveled edges, uneven grade and plant over-run. Contractors commonly round up to the nearest quarter ton.
What is the difference between hot mix and cold patch?
Hot mix is plant-produced and compacted hot, giving a durable long-term surface. Cold patch is a temporary, aggregate-and-oil mix for potholes.
