What does this construction calculator do?
The flooring calculator estimates how much hardwood, laminate, vinyl or carpet you need to cover a rectangular room, based on the plank size you plan to install.
It applies a waste allowance that suits your chosen material, then reports the number of planks and boxes (at 20 sq ft per box) so you can order the right quantity in one trip.

Worked example
A 15 ft × 12 ft room floored with 5 in × 4 ft laminate planks, ordered with 10% waste.
- Area = 15 × 12 = 180 sq ft.
- Plank width = 5 in ÷ 12 = 0.417 ft.
- Plank coverage = 0.417 × 4 = 1.667 sq ft.
- With 10% waste: 180 × 1.1 = 198 sq ft.
- Planks = 198 ÷ 1.667 = 119 planks; boxes = 198 ÷ 20 = 10 boxes.
Answer: Order ≈ 119 planks (10 boxes).
Tips and common mistakes
Tips
- Acclimate hardwood and laminate in the room for 48–72 hours before installation so boards don't expand or shrink after laying.
- Stagger end joints at least 6 in between rows for stability and a natural look.
- Leave a 1/4 in expansion gap around the walls for floating floors — the baseboard hides it.
- For carpet, add extra for seams and pattern matching; patterned rolls waste more than solid colors.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Measuring the room at its widest and longest points but forgetting closets and doorways.
- Using one waste percentage for every material — hardwood genuinely wastes more than vinyl plank.
- Ordering planks by piece count without checking the square footage per box on the label.
